Keywords:
Foreign body ingestion, sharp objectsAbstract
Foreign body ingestion is a frequent cause of emergency admissions in adult patients with a psychiatric disorder. Most ingested objects are expelled spontaneously and only 1% require surgical management. Complications are associated with exposure time and object characteristics. The present case refers to a 27-yearold female patient, with a history of schizophrenia, who was admitted as an emergency, referring to the ingestion of multiple sharp objects, whose definitive management was surgical within the first 24 hours, proving timely to avoid severe associated complications to the ingestion of sharp foreign bodies.
