Abstract

Transanal proctosigmoidectomy, or Altmeier’s procedure, is a surgical alternative in the management of rectal prolapse. Strangled rectal prolapse is uncommon and no cases have been reported in patients with congenital hypothyroidism. Description of the case: we present the case of a 67 year old male patient with congenital hypothyroidism, senile dementia and several other comorbidities who presents with perianal pain and a strangled prolapse. Transanal surgical approach was indicated through an Altmeier’s procedure. The patient made good progress and was discharged on the fifth postoperative day, no diverting colostomy was constructed and he has been followed up for 24 months. Conclusion: Altmeier’s procedure is a safe alternative for the approach of strangled rectal prolapses.
