Abstract

Gallstone ileus is a rare type of intestinal obstruction caused by impaction of gallstones in the gastrointestinal tract, it occurs mostly in women with a 3.5: 1 ratio. This pathology has a mortality of between 12% and 27% and a morbidity of up to 50%. The most common symptoms are abdominal distention, vomiting, and diffuse abdominal pain. Some cases have biliary symptoms such as jaundice. The usual impaction site is in the ileocecal valve, to a lesser extent in the duodenum. Preoperative diagnosis is very difficult due to its low incidence. Surgical pathologies in patients convalescing from pneumonia caused by the COVID-19 virus are difficult to approach, in view of the pulmonary and systemic damage they present. An 89-year-old male patient is reported with a preoperative diagnosis of gallstone ileus and COVID-19 pneumonia.
