Abstract

Objectives: To describe patients characteristics, surgical procedure and complications of hernioplasties performed at Cayetano Heredia Hospital during 2015. Materials and methods: Case series study of patients who underwent surgical intervention due to umbilical hernias requiring mesh, obtaining their clinical and epidemiological characteristics. A review of the medical records and operative report regarding the patients was conducted. Results: Most of the patients enrolled for the study were young male adults, overweight or obese and hypertension as their main comorbidity. Regarding the surgery, underlay technique was predominant over onlay technique. The mean operative time was 60 minutes, and the average defect size was 4 cm2. No major postoperative complications were found. Conclusions: It was found that patients who underwent umbilical hernioplasty at Cayetano Heredia Hospital had similar epidemiological characteristics as patients described in other studies, as well as for surgical characteristics and post-operative evolution.
