Abstract

Objective: determine the prevalence of abdominal trauma and its management in patients… admitted to the emergency department of the Maria Auxiliadora Hospital in the period from July 2012 to July 2017. Methods: a descriptive, retrospective, observational and cross-sectional study was carried out in 147 patients who presented abdominal trauma. Results: Of the 551 patients treated for abdominal trauma, 32.4% (179) were female and 67.5% (372) were male; the highest frequency of abdominal trauma by age group was between 20 and 50 years (73%); abdominal trauma was classified open (58%) closed 41.19%). The most frequent cause of abdominal trauma was stab wound 52,4% (289), gunshot wound 6.5% (35), and road traffic accident 21.7% (120). The time of illness upon admission was up to one hour in 86.2% and between 1 and 3 hours in 12.8%. Surgical as employed for 77% (427) and 23% (124) medical had management. The most frequently affected organs were small intestine 37.7%, colon 36.6%, liver 14%, spleen 9.2%, whist15.7% were laparotomies without intraabdominal alterations. 6.7% (37) Mortality was. Conclusions: Abdominal trauma is common in the population of the Southern Cone of Lima, its diagnosis and treatment are sometimes difficult due to the variety and number of injuries, occasionally presenting fatal complications.
