Abstract

Introduction: Colon GISTs are rare tumors that usually present with gastrointestinal bleeding. Case report: 33-year-old man with 18-month history of gastrointestinal bleeding and anemia. Colonoscopy revealed a proliferative, friable lesion located at the splenic flexure. The biopsy concluded spindle cell GIST. Abdominal tomography revealed a solid cystic exophytic heterogeneous mass, defined borders with central calcification. No metastatic lesions or adenomegaly. The patient underwent left colectomy and end-to-end colocolonic anastomosis, after which he had a favorable ecovery. The pathological study revealed a colon-dependent gastrointestinal stromal tumor. Discussion and conclusions: Colon GISTs have unique characteristics that distinguish them: Poor overall survival compared to gastric GISTs, having poor response to systemic therapy. The only treatment with improvement in survival is surgery.
