OBJECTIVE: To describe the clinical features, management and outcomes of patients with abdominal trauma laparotomized, undergoing damage control surgery at the Hospital Cayetano Heredia, from August 2007 to March 2012.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: An observational, descriptive, retrospective study. Operative reports were reviewed for all patients with abdominal trauma laparotomized from August 2007 until March 2012. Complete medical records of patients who underwent damage control surgery were reviewed to identify peoperative variables. Results are presented in tables and graphs. We used descriptive statistics tools.
RESULTS: The frequency of damage control surgery was 27 patients for 242 laparotomies for abdominal trauma (11. 15%). 14 patients (51.8%) had blunt abdominal trauma and 13 (48.2%) had penetrating trauma. The average values of trauma scores were: ISS: 26.59, RTS: 6.41, TRISS: 78.26 and ATI: 29. There were 10 patients who died (37%), six deaths in phase 1, three in phase
2, and one died after Phase 3. Morbidity was 100%. The average hospital stay was 25 days. The average surgical intensive care stay was 5 days.
CONCLUSION: The application of damage control surgery in patients with severe abdominal trauma is a surgical technique that improves survival, although patients are not exempt from significant morbidity.
