The aim was to demonstrate how competencies approach and the use of student e-portfolio improved performance assesment of internship at the surgery department of the Jorge Reátegui Delgado hospital. In the theoretical framework of competencies training and particularly from an educational socio - formative perspective three competencies were validated and developed. An electronic portofolio for repository with quality evidence was designed allowing the assesment of progresive improvement and competencies achieved by interns. Competencies assesment along with the portfolio showed to be a viable educational strategy that has positively and significativelly influenced training during internship. Internship as a teaching method, urgently requires new approaches to assess learning and skills promoting active participation of interns along with a continous reflection process.
