Abstract

Aim: To identify the relationship between one or more risk factors for cholelithiasis with a specific type of cholelithiasis, according to the Japanese classification. Patients and Methods: We performed a descriptive correlation study, from November 2010 through December 2011. We selected 50 patients who underwent cholecystectomy. Results: The most frequently found risk factors were female gender in 80%, age over 40 years in 56%, family history in 48% and multiparity in 46%. The most common type of gallstone was cholesterol mixed type in 46%. The results of correlation between different risk factors and types of gallstones were not significant. Conclusion: No direct relationship between a given risk factor and a specific type of gallstone could be determined. Etiology could be multifactorial.
