Periampullary tumors have significantly increased in recent decades, accounting for up to 2 percent of malignancies in the USA. Every year 28,000 new cases are reported. The objective of this study is to determine incidence, epidemiological features and histopathological diagnosis with its respective cell differentiation in patients with periampullary tumors surgically treated (pancreaticoduodenectomy) at Hospital Alberto Sabogal Sologuren of ESSALUD during the period 2004-2011. This is a retrospective descriptive study; patients with periampullary tumors treated surgically were selected from the records of moperative reports and anatomopathological reports between 2004 to 2011. A data sheet was opened for each patient. Statistical analysis included frequency tables with absolute and percentage values. During the study period 56 pancreatoduodenectomies were performed in patients with periampullary tumors with an upward curve in recent years. Head of pancreas tumors were the most frequent (44.64%). The male/female ratio was 1.8, similar to other studies. The age range varies between 29 and 90 years, more frequent in those older than 60 years (55.35%). Adenocarcinomas were the most frequent tumors in 89.39% of cases and in 10.71% mesenchymal tumors were found. Moderately differentiated adenocarcinomas were found in 46.42%, signet cell adenocarcinomas were present in 5.35%. Hospital Alberto Sabogal Sologuren is a high volume surgery center for Pancreaticoduodenectomies.
