Background
Acute abdomen is a sindrome which main feature is the sudden emergence of a clinical picture of abdominal pain. It challenges the physician’s clinical judgment, because it requires early diagnosis and prompt treatment, which is surgical type most of the time. Morbidity and mortality are close related with delay in diagnosis and treatment.
Patients And Methods
Clinical records of patients who were surgically treated in Emergency at the Carlos Alberto Seguin Escobedo (CASE) National Hospital from January 2007 to December 2010 (48 months)
Results
There were 1314 cases. 66.56% were operated with conventional surgery. The most frecuent type of acute abdomen was the infl ammatory one, with 77.02%. Acute cholecystitis constituted 56.62%, and Acute appendicitis,41.5%. The obstructive acute abdomen was in second place, and it accounted for 13.17% of total cases. Postoperative bridles and adherences were the etiology in 46.24%, followed by complicated hernia in 20.23%
Conclusion
Inflammatory acute abdomen was the most frecuent,and it’s main etiology was acute cholecystitis, in patients attended at emergency of the CASE National Hospital
