Abstract

Objective: to determine the frequency, management, and mortality in hepatic trauma patients in our institution. Material and methods: 63 patients with hepatic trauma were included and analyzed retrospectively; data was collected through chart review. Results: 85% were male and mean age was 33 years. The most common mechanism of injury was gunshot (35%). Hepatic injury grade II was found in 35%. Penetrating trauma occurred in 54% and blunt trauma in 46%. Among penetrating trauma patients, 88% had surgery. In blunt trauma, non-operative management was 83%, with a failure rate of 17%. 38% of patients developed complications, most of them (63%). Conclusion: the frequency of hepatic trauma was 15.36% and the mortality rate was 6.35% in 7 years. The mortality related factors were tachycardia, hypotension, need of blood units and severe trauma scores.
